Abraham was talking with the colonel when he offered him whiskey and cigarettes. Lincoln then proceeded to tell the colonel that he would agree to a cigarette but the colonel would have to hear his story out. When Lincoln mom was dying a long time ago, she made him promise that he would never drink or smoke. He then asked the colonel if he would have to break his promise just to take the cigarette. The colonel was full of emotion and said no and that he would have wanted to make a promise and keep it to his mom like Abraham did.

"Kindness is the essence of greatness."
Joseph B. Wirthlin
This means that if you are kind to the people around you then only greatness will come to you. Good things come to those who treat people how the would like to be treated. If you do kind things to people more doors and opportunities will approach you. For example, the little boy in the video offered up his ball to another boy in the stands who was sad because he did't catch it. Because he decided to do this, he was given recognition, a baseball  bat signed by your favorite player, and got to throw the first pitch for the diamond backs game.
